The House of Representative recently paid tribute to Helena Z Benitez, former Senator and Batasang Pambansa member, in a special session held in celebration of March as Women’s Month.
The resolution commended Dr. Benitez for her dynamic role in uplifting the status of women in the Philippines.
It recognized her being a woman of many “firsts” including first Filipina Chair of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, the 1st Filipina and 1st woman President of the Governing Council of the UN Environment Programme, founder of the Bayanihan National Folk Dance Company, and the 1st Filipina to be given the Presidential Award of the Order of Sikatuna, Rank of Datu.
In her response, Dr. Benitez thanked the members of Congress for their gift of remembrance and urged them to strive to be of service to the country.
Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. and Congresswoman Gina P. de Venecia led well-wishers who greeted Dr. Benitez in Congress including representatives of her various advocacies such as the National Commission on Women, the Girl Scouts and the Philippine Women’s University. Benitez family members including Congressman Albee Benitez were also on hand for the Congressional tribute to their beloved Tita Helen

The PWU Chairperson Dr. Helena Z Benitez will be conferred an award as contained in House Resolution No 1956, citing her for leadership and achievements on women’s issues, authored by Cong. Gina de Venecia, president, Womens Legislators Association with WLA members as co-author.
The award is being given in celebration of International Women’s Month, and will be presented by Cong. de Venecia during the start of the House Session on March 9, 2015 at the Batasang Pambansa, Quezon City.View more Headlines
