Remembering Dean Conrado Benitez

Today (January 4, 2016) marks the 45th death anniversary of Dean Conrado F. Benitez, who founded PWU together with his wife, Mrs. Francisca T. Benitez and several of their friends. He was born in Pagsanjan, Laguna and in 1911 he was sent to the University of Chicago as a “pensionado.” “Daddy B” as he was fondly called was a widely respected Economist and Historian. He was one of the “7 Wise Men” who drafted the 1935 Philippine Constitution. He was also the first Filipino Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and the founding dean of the College of Business Administration of the University of the Philippines. He was the first President of the Philippine Rural Reconstruction Movement and the first editor of the Philippine Herald, a daily newspaper in English. In the 1960s he helped organize the Quezon City Citizens League for Good Government to oppose the rampant corruption prevailing in QC. He won and served as a City councilor until his death in 1971.
