Gawad Philwomenian 2019: Search for Unsung Heroes

Posted: June 18, 2019

“One who does great deeds but receives little or no recognition for them” defines the unsung hero. This prompted the Social Science and Humanities Faculty of the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) to initiate the Gawad Philwomenian 2019: The Search for Unsung Heroes as part of the study of two subjects: Introduction to ASEAN Culture and History and Readings in Philippine History. The awarding ceremonies for the winners will be held on Thursday, June 20, 2019 at 1pm at the Conrado Benitez Hall.

“We have been studying the culture and the people who made significant contributions in the development of ASEAN countries including the men and women in our community– the unsung heroes – and how they inspire our students” enthused Dr. Jesusa Manalo, one of the faculty advisers.

Students were grouped into 5-6 member teams to search for nominees based on the following criteria: Moral integrity, transformative leadership, excellence in the field of service and legacy. During their midterms, the students submitted a brief documentation on the profile and accomplishments of their nominees to the faculty advisers who acted as panel of judges: Raul Chebat, Dr. Maximo Ilag, Dr. Jesusa Manalo and Ricardo Gaton.

The 12 chosen nominees are:

  • James David Alcantara, Young Scientist
  • Fr. Leomar Arenillo, Missionary Priest
