2020 JCB Award for Printmaking

The SFAD JCB Gallery is pleased to announce the awarding of winners & exhibition opening of all the entries in the 2020 JCB Award for Printmaking on Saturday, March 7, 2020.

Now on its second year, the competition’s theme Bayanihan: Sayaw sa Himig ng Panahon, focuses on re-contextualizing the concept of “bayanihan” as the core essence of Filipino culture – established in the spirit of situating communal unity, effort, and cooperation to achieve our common goal as a nation.

In affirming PWU’s position as a locus of culture, heritage & the arts and in celebrating the legacy of Manuel ‘Mang Maning’ Rodriguez Sr. (Father of Contemporary Printmaking in the Philippines), who held his workshops here in PWU as precursor to the Printmaking Association of the Philippines – the competition aims to continue in promoting the discipline as a popular intermediary for artistic discourse and as an instrument in locating new modes of artistic expression among the young breed of Filipino visual artists.

Noel Soler Cuizon, SFAD JCB Gallery Curator said that the inception of the first and only inter-school printmaking competition honors Jose Conrado “Joly” Benitez (JCB), the 7th president of PWU and his efforts in advancing printmaking as a popular medium in contemporary art practice.

The awarding of winners will take place at the SFAD JCB Gallery at 4 PM preceded by the opening of the exhibit & reception at the Helena Z Benitez Hall.
