History
The School of Medical Technology, formerly the Institute of Medical Technology, started in 1967 when the PWU Board of Trustees approved the offering of the degree program Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology. This was an idea first conceived by the late Dr. Nelly A. Herrera, former Director of the PWU Health Center.
The Institute of Medical Technology participated in the organization of the Philippine Association of Schools of Medical Technology and Public Health (PASMETH) on June 22, 1970, which became one of the leading Medical Technology organizations. PWU became one of the first member schools of the association. The oath-taking of the first Registered Medical Technologists was held on April 17, 1972 in which PWU graduates took part by virtue of their having passed the Board Examination in September, 1970.
In schoolyear 1987-1988, the permit for M.S. Medical Technology degree program was granted by CHED. Classes were then opened for Medical Technology practitioners and educators. A year after, CHED granted recognition of the new course Master of Science in Medical Technology.
In 1989, four PWU Medical Technology graduates topped the Medical Technology Board Exams. This feat was followed in 1993 when PWU Medical Technology graduates again topped the board exams given in September. And in 1994, our student Ms. Ethel Cortez became top 1 in the licensure exams.
Schoolyear 2000-2001 added another honor to the Institute of Medical Technology. Dean Dr. Nini F. Lim was elected President of the Philippine Association of Schools of Medical Technology and Public Health (PASMETH).
In June of 2008, MSHSM class was first offered and granted permit. This provides the healthcare heads and chairs the opportunity to build on their leadership and management abilities, critical thinking skills, problem solving techniques and strong financial skills in managing health care programs.
Our first-taker graduates from 2015, 2017 got 100% passing rate, and 90% in 2018, in the Board exams, and we continue to soar. In 2018, the School of Medical Technology renewed its PAASCU accreditation.
The medical technology laboratory expanded to its current place in the Malvar Wing in 2019, with 3 specialized laboratories to perform its professional lab courses.
2020 was an auspicious year. In the PASMETH Lab Olympics in March, our PWU students garnered the 3rd place over-all, 2nd place in Histopathology, 2nd place in Clinical Microscopy and 3rd place in Parasitology. In August, in the time of COVID 19 pandemic, Assoc. Prof. Sherwin B. Toriano was appointed Program Chair of the School of Medical Technology, by which he was called the pandemic head.
April 2021, we first offered the molecular biology subject, an important addition to the new curriculum. With this, we were able to complete the molecular lab and acquired our very own PCR machine.
February 14, 2022 marks the opening of the Limited face-to-face classes in Medical Technology, and the pilot class for the university. For having complied with the guidelines and retrofitting of the facilities, we gave our interns the opportunity to hone their laboratory skills, cultivating a balance with theoretical knowledge.
