Courses Offered

The Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy (BSPH) is a four-year college degree program intended for people who seek a diverse range of career options in pharmacy practice such as the industry, hospitals, community, research and regulatory oversight within government agencies. It is a health profession that focuses not only on the identification, developing, manufacturing and dispensing of drugs, but also it has the responsibility for drug therapy management in patients, the generation and transmission of knowledge about proper selection and use of drugs and their effect on people. A patient-oriented service is now the focus of this program and providing such education redounds to an improvement in the esteem in which our profession is held.

The BS Pharmacy of the Philippine Women’s University offers a Ladderized system of learning. “Ladderized education refers to the harmonization of all education and training mechanisms that allow students and workers to progress between technical-vocational and higher education programs, or vice-versa. It opens opportunities for career and educational advancement to students and workers. It creates a seamless and border less education and training system that will allow transfers in terms of flexible entry and exit between technical-vocational and higher education programs in the post-secondary school educational system;” At the end of the second year of the student, they will be able to acquire an Pharmacy Services National Certification III from TESDA through hours of training and internship.

During the 4th year of the student, they will have the opportunity to take extra courses from the two MS Pharmacy programs offered at the University to be able to acquire a master’s degree for at least one and a half years.

Master of Science in Pharmacy with specialization in Clinical Pharmacy and Research is consistent with the University’s mission which aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills that will enhance their competency as health care professionals. It promotes the mission in raising awareness about current health issues and how to address them both at the national and regional levels. This eventually contributes to the improvement of the pharmacy profession in the Philippines.

Clinical pharmacists are now accepted as an important part of the healthcare team. She/he works in coordination with doctors for an improved patient healthcare. They have some very specific roles which aim at ensuring patient safety. Through the clinical pharmacists, treatment goals for many people are achieved more efficiently. This is because the program can help them develop their analytical skills and they can be consultants on rational drug therapy in the future.

This specialization provides students with a broad range of knowledge, skills and resources to practice effectively as a clinical pharmacy practitioner involved in the quality use of medicines and pharmaceutical care. These skills include the capacity to individualize, review and monitor a patient’s medication regimen; demonstrate effective communication skills in clinical and non-clinical scenarios; critically appraise medical and pharmaceutical literature, as well as to recognize and describe social issues relating to medicine use.

In addition, pharmacists will gain insight into contemporary management strategies for pharmacy and health care as well as explore research and evaluation of pharmacy services and practice. Regular updates of the course will integrate emerging clinical evidence and current controversies. A major strength of the program is the emphasis on developing clinical practice and the integration of evidence based medicine.

Master of Science in Pharmacy with specialization in Pharmacy Management and Administration is designed for students who wish to combine theoretical topics of drugs and healthcare with business management. This program prepares individuals to apply managerial, social, and economic sciences to the study and management of the distribution and use of pharmaceutical products and the provision of other pharmaceutical services.

This specialization involves not only the wealth of knowledge obtained through the study of pharmacy, but also that of business, marketing and public policy. This is a challenging and rewarding field that could combine two passions: business and science. This field of specialization contains coursework in pharmaceutical regulations, marketing and distribution. It includes instruction in research design and methods, statistics, social and organizational behavior, pharmacoeconomics, management of pharmacy services, research, product development and marketing, health laws and regulations which centers on pharmacy and pharmaceutics, risk assessment and organization of the health care system.

Those who have this specialization can choose to work in the pharmaceutical industry, medical setting or other related occupations in the government or even pharmacy education. This specialization provides an understanding of the role of the pharmacy and pharmacy managers as they relate to healthcare systems. Pharmaceutical administrators manage, promote and study the impact of pharmaceutical products and services.

History

  • The PWU School of Pharmacy was founded in 1926.
  • In 1947, Dr. Clara Aragon-Villanueva was raised to the rank of Dean Emeritus. Dr. Luz Oliveros-Belardo assumed the deanship of the College of Pharmacy.
  • In 1951, the PWU Pharmacy (drugstore) was established with the Women’s Polyclinic
  • The College of Pharmacy has pioneered in the introduction of new courses, such as Antibiotics in 1950 and Hospital Pharmacy in 1962.
  • In 1993, the consolidated and ladderized curriculum was implemented where a student who finished the second year receives a certificate of Associate in Pharmacy. Technician and a student who finished third year receives a Diploma as pharmacy assistant.
  • College of Pharmacy was awarded with a Plaque of Recognition as one of the Top Ten Schools of Pharmacy in the Philippines by the Professional Regulation Commission for exemplary performance in the July 1995 and January 1997 Pharmacist Licensure Examination.
  • In 1995, the College of Pharmacy was granted Level II Accredited Status by PAASCU.
  • SY 2004 -2005, the College of Pharmacy was converted to the School of Pharmacy.
  • In 2003, the College of Pharmacy was granted Level II 1st Resurvey status. Preparations are underway for its level II 2nd Resurvey status.
  • A remarkable 68% increase in enrollment for BSPH was officially noted
  • PWU School of Pharmacy will continue to turn out alumnae who are to play vital roles in the promotion of health and in the development of a healthy and productive citizenry for nation building.

The PWU School of Pharmacy was founded in 1926 under the initiative of Dr. Francisca Tirona Benitez. It seeks to achieve excellence in the education of students to address the pharmaceutical health care needs of the country in all spheres of Pharmacy practice. Its vision is to be a provider of graduates with excellent pharmaceutical education, research and services in a dynamic health care environment.

Pharmacy is now recognized as an integral part of a complete healthcare system; if you have opted to study pharmacy, you will enjoy a rewarding career in areas ranging from academe to community pharmacy to manufacturing and research Pharmacists can also pursue quality management of pharmaceutical manufacturing or regulatory matters related to pharmaceutical manufacturing.
